Emulsion Lift Artwork
Many of the most beautiful things in nature are fleeting; flowers bloom for a few weeks then go to seed, birds hatch their young then migrate and wild animals can be briefly admired from a distance before they scurry back to their homes. Even permanent fixtures like trees, streams and fields change with the seasons.
Polaroid and instant photography capture moments as they happen, with results varying from completely indistinguishable to stunningly beautiful, the film can be as cunning and variable as Mother Nature herself. My photography aims to marry the two to create one of a kind, impossible to duplicate images.
Once the image is captured and the film is developed, I carry out a process called an emulsion lift. Simple in theory, this process involves removing the emulsion layer which holds the image from the backing and protective plastic layer and transferring it onto another surface, most commonly paper.
The results add an extra layer to the artwork. Little rips in the film, smudges, tears in the corners, folds and creases all become part of its character. An already unique film photograph is transformed into a non-replicable piece of art due to its imperfections.
These emulsion lifts are then digitised, enlarged to enhance the details and printed onto quality paper to deliver the art prints available here in my online store. Each of my art prints only has a limited run, usually of less than ten prints. After all, many of the most beautiful things are fleeting.
